The Best Couples’ Weekend Getaways Outside of NYC

It’s a tale as old as time for NYC residents: you dream up a trip with your partner, then end up abandoning plans because of [insert excuse here]. Trust me when I say that the place you’ve been fawning over on IG is closer and easier to get to than you think. We’ve put together a list of the best weekend getaways for NYC couples that will have you spending more time exploring and relaxing than in-transit — because who needs to spend more time commuting?

Although the majority of the places and stops listed below are more generally considered “upstate” by Manhattanites, each town and region has its own distinct set of activities and destinations worth seeing, so we’ve separated them out. Don’t let that stop you from visiting them all, though!

Hudson Valley

Romantic getaways to the Hudson Valley region are popular among New Yorkers, and for good reason. The short distance combined with the sleepy-town vibes and beloved attractions keep couples coming back year after year, whether by campervan or otherwise!

Where to Eat: Arrowood Farms Brewery and Distillery

Where to Visit: Dia:Beacon

Where to Stay: Stony Rose Farms

Catskills

You’re probably already familiar with the Catskill Mountains by name, but perhaps never been to the region yourself. The Catskills is a must-visit, especially for those just beginning to explore the vast lands known to Manhattanites only as “Upstate.” You really can’t go wrong with the area, and even with traffic, it’s only a few hours outside of the city. You’ll definitely want to plan a romantic weekend in nature, and staying at a private Hipcamp site (there are tons in the Catskills) is your best bet.

Where to Eat: Phoenicia Diner / Early Terrible

Where to Visit: Diamond Notch Falls

Where to Stay: Wright’s Farm

Cape May

🎶On the way to Cape Mayyyyy 🎶

This last destination isn’t in New York like Hudson Valley and the Catskills, but Cape May, NJ is a beachy twist on the traditional weekend getaway with all the same small town charm that upstate NY offers city escapees. While the drive is a bit longer and you’ll probably only want to visit in the summer when everything’s open, it’s still one of the most romantic locations for couples and has an endless array of restaurants and attractions.

Where to Eat: Uncle Bill’s Pancake House

Where to Visit: The beach! / Washington Street Mall

Where to Stay: Sea Grove Camping Resort
